BACKGROUND matsumoto takanori was born at the peak of winter, in the kind of weather that made the bones freeze. his parents, a housewife and a regular salaryman, were overjoyed at the child they had been trying to conceive for years. takanori's life was a normal one, spending his days goofing off in school like all his friends. maybe he wasn't a genius but he did well enough - enough that his parents kept bringing up "doctor", "lawyer", "business." those weren't the words he wanted to hear though.
fond of music from young, takanori had already been daydreaming about maybe being a singer. he and a group of friends had a band; on the weekends they piled on makeup and glitter and strutted around the local venues, takanori screaming his lungs out and sashaying around the stage. his parents didn't know and he liked it that way - they wouldn't have approved.
but of course they did, eventually, find out.
the ensuing argument was enough for takanori to walk out of the house, with his dad yelling at his back. "if you leave you're no longer my son!" and so he wasn't. freshly graduated from high school, with nothing to his name but the money he and his band made from gigs, takanori became ruki. he didn't look back and he didn't let himself regret his choices. if he let his parents live his life for him, well, what was the use in being alive?
korea was the last place in the world he thought he would end up at, but he did. he couldn't say how he made it over the waters, his world a whirlwind of playing at this club and that, smoking too many cigarettes to be healthy and falling asleep in the living room of any friend that would help him.
college was an even more distant idea in his mind, but the friend who moved to korea with him convinced him to go. it wasn't quite what he thought it would be - the students seemed to party and date more than they did any studying - but he found his place rather quickly. (and maybe, though he doesn't tell anybody, maybe he wants to show his father that he could make good decisions on his own. and maybe he wanted his father to be proud of him again. maybe.)
after graduation, takanori took some time to just laze around, now that he didn't have the pressure of school on his shoulders. he spent some time with this band and that band, playing all the music he wanted, making the music scene of hongde his haunts. it wasn't until a friend asked him to cover a shift at the tattoo and piercing parlor that he worked at that takanori thought about really doing anything with his life that wasn't music. all he did was work the front desk for a few hours, jotting down appointments and filling out paperwork, but he loved the atmosphere. fast forward ten years later and takanori now owns that parlor, proudly named saints & sinners.
FACTS
• saints & sinners has practically become his home. there's a couch in his back office that he falls asleep in most nights, and the year before he expanded the parlor to add in a break room.
• he hasn't given up singing. every once in a while he'll hit up open mics, and is the back-up singer for a couple of bands around hongdae.
• most people know him as ruki, the stage name he's kept. takanori believes whole-heartedly that to know the true name of a person is to have power over them, so he keeps his real name close. maybe it's a little silly, but it's his, and he gives his name sparingly. to know him as takanori is to definitely have his trust.
• make fun of his height all you want, it won't make him angry. hell, he'll join in. but he'll probably think you're a giant child.
• "i love you."
"don't."
"why not?"
"i don't love you."
• a couple of years ago, takanori tried his hand at racing. he did a couple of races as a solo racer, borrowing a car one of his employees owned. it was fun, it was thrilling, and he was actually a decent racer, but a close call with a lamp post was enough to make him leave the racing for the people that were really passionate about it.
• while many people expect takanori to be covered in tattoos and piercings, he isn't. he only has his ear pierced, and one tiny tattoo: the parlor's logo on his left hip, about an inch big.
